Our story
Started in a church basement, built for the long run.
The original founding crew — twelve volunteers, three folding tables, one shared idea: show up every week.
Brightline began in 2014 when a former public-school teacher named Renée Calder set up tables in a community room and started tutoring a dozen students whose families couldn't afford private support. Word spread, volunteers showed up, and the dozen became thousands.
Our theory of change is simple: students who get consistent, trusted academic support across years — not just semesters — close gaps that one-off programs can't. We work in the same districts, with the same families, for as long as they want us there.
Today we run after-school tutoring four nights a week, Saturday literacy circles, and a six-week Summer Bridge program — all free, all year, K through 12. Almost 90% of our students return for a second year.
Brightline is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. 87¢ of every dollar goes directly to programs. The other 13¢ funds the coordination and training that keeps quality high.
